Due to the nature of Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3d printing for the manufacturing process, the surface finish of all products sold is slightly rough, akin to 800 grit wet dry sandpaper.
All returns are subject to a $25 restocking fee within 90 days of purchase and customer is responsible for shipping costs back to Custom Bike Xcessories. The returned box must be in new condition.
Note that the refund of the purchase is based on the price of the item and does not include the cost paid for shipping, for example: given the cost of the box was $200 and the shipping cost was $15, the refund amount would be $175
Order Cancellations are subject to a $25 cancellation fee 3 days after order date. This is due to the fact that the item is being printed by the printing service after the 3 day period. And the print cannot be cancelled.
Boxes for uncommon size frames, ie less than 51cm or greater than 56 are subject to an additional $20 fee. Those sizes do not sell as easily and can remain in inventory for months.
Here's a quick instructional video showing how to pack your box most effectively.
Unfortunately, my cost for the boxes is high. If I could sell them for a lower price, I would.
When I first started selling the boxes in late 2018, I investigated getting them injection molded, thinking it would be cheaper than 3d printing, however, to get a mold made, costs $10000, and you then have to order a minimum of 500-1000 units made from that mold. For Cervelo bikes, I have to design a different box for each model that I sell a box for, I also have to design the box to fit each size due to the shape of the frames, that’s 5-6 rear boxes and 5-6 bottom bracket boxes. I sell boxes for the old P5, the p5 disc, the p2/p3 and the p series, that’s about 40 different boxes for Cervelo alone. Then there are the boxes for the other brands, Argon 18 (5 boxes), Specialized (4), Felt (2), Giant (4), Canyon (7), Ventum (4), Trek (3), and many more. That’s over 70 boxes, that’s over $700000 in molds, that’s not including the price of the 500 pieces per mold.
It takes me anywhere between 15-25 hours to design a box for a given bike, that’s not including measuring the bike, test fitting the prototype on the bike (multiple iterations of it to get the fit just perfect). I usually don’t have easy access to the bike, I have to drive to a customer to do that. A lot of times I have to do remote test fits which poses its own challenges as I can’t see for myself the frame and see how and why the prototype box doesn’t quite fit.
Some boxes I just don’t sell many of just because the bike is not as popular as others.
Also, I don’t get volume discounts from the printing service since I only order boxes as orders come in. I never know from one month to the next what boxes are going to sell, so I can’t carry inventory of all the boxes I sell.
This is something I do on the side; I have regular full time job as a software engineer which keeps me quite busy.
Hope this helps explain the pricing of the boxes.
When traveling with your bike, ie putting the bike in a soft or hard bike case to take on the plane or just transport. Remove the box from the bike and pack it separately. The box is not designed to withstand the rigors of the rough handling of bike boxes by baggage handlers.
